Chapter 6: Slowing the Spread of Poverty

Survivor’s Guilt

Escaping poverty does not mean leaving behind the memories, the people, or the weight of where you started. Survivor’s guilt is the quiet shadow that follows progress, asking why me and not someone else? I have carried that question many times. While I pushed forward, building education, career, and stability, I could not ignore the fact that others I grew up with remained trapped in the cycle I had worked so hard to escape. At times, it felt unfair to celebrate my victories when I knew the struggles of so many were ongoing. Survivor’s guilt is not about regret, but about wrestling with responsibility—the responsibility to honor the journey, to acknowledge those who could not take the same path, and to use success as a way to give back. It is a reminder that breaking out of poverty is never just about one person; it is about lifting others whenever possible.

Breaking Barriers

Breaking barriers is about more than my own story—it is about recognizing and celebrating the achievements of others who continue to push boundaries and set new examples. Over the years, I have been fortunate to witness people around me defy expectations and rise above obstacles. One of the most meaningful reminders came from a team member, Sunil, who gifted me a book as a token of gratitude and inspiration. It symbolized not just appreciation, but the shared commitment to growth and learning. Another proud moment came when my daughter received a proclamation from the City of Issaquah for her work with them, an acknowledgment that her contributions had already begun to make a difference in her community. These milestones remind me that breaking barriers is not a solitary act. It is a collective movement, carried forward by individuals who dare to redefine what is possible and create pathways for others. To celebrate them is to recognize that the story of progress is richer when it is shared.

Poverty Mindset

These photos capture the reality of how good intentions can sometimes lead to difficult outcomes. The property shown here was offered to a tenant in the spirit of providing opportunity and support, but over time, it was left in disrepair due to neglect and lack of care. What began as a gesture of goodwill turned into a costly challenge, requiring significant investment to restore the space to a livable condition. They serve as a reminder that generosity without accountability can create unintended consequences, and that the mindset with which one approaches responsibility plays a crucial role in shaping outcomes.
